Do you have dreams that feel out of reach because you’re not sure you’ve got what it takes?
We all know what it feels like to lack confidence, and most of us have experienced imposter syndrome at some point in our lives. The real question is: how much is this holding you back right now – and is it costing you too much?
Before you can change it, it helps to get clear on what confidence actually means to you. We each have our own way of thinking about this quality. For me, confidence doesn’t mean being good at everything or believing I can do everything. It means trusting that I can handle what life throws at me, that I will find a way through challenging situations, and that I’m willing to put myself out there – while also staying true to what feels right for me.
That might be very different from someone else’s idea of confidence. The stereotype is often the loudest person in the room, calling out for attention – but that isn’t necessarily true confidence. Real confidence is being comfortable in your own skin, clear about who you are, and able to stand in that without needing to prove yourself.
Confidence is also context‑specific. You might feel very confident at work but unsure in dating, or steady with friends but anxious in front of a room full of people.
Our lives have many facets – career, relationships, family, health, spirituality, creativity, and more – and our sense of confidence can vary across each.
So, if you were to choose just one area of your life where you’d like to feel more confident, what would that be? Do you have a sense of what it would actually be like to feel confident there? How would you know you had the confidence you’re looking for – what would you be doing, thinking, or feeling differently?
By answering these questions, you’ve already begun to create a vision of how you want things to be different from how they are now. You’re sketching out what “more confident, in your way” would look and feel like.
If you want to explore how to turn that vision into reality, this is exactly the kind of work we can do together in coaching – clarifying what confidence means for you, uncovering what’s been holding you back, and taking practical steps towards the version of you who already lives it.
